DISSECTION PROGRAMME WINTER 2010 / 11Led By Dr. Andrew Hemmings and Gillian Higgins. These are hands-on day courses offering an insight in to the anatomy of the horse and providing a rare and invaluable opportunity to look at the structures that we influence by training and therapy. Dr. Andrew Hemmings is an experienced neuroanatomist and principal lecturer in Animal Science and Production at the Royal Agricultural College. Andrew will demonstrate and explain any techniques required. This series of guided dissections gives a unique insight into the equine brain and neural function, and the composition of the muscular skeletal structure as well as other organs and systems.
The popular Spinal Dissection is already full for 2010. We are running another day on 26th February so please book early to avoid disappointment. The Cranial dissection will look at looking at all aspects of the head and poll area including the mouth, teeth, hyoid apparatus, the musculature of the jaw and the TMJ. It will also examine how brain mechanisms influence behaviour patterns and how malfunction can give rise to repetitive stereotypic behaviours such as crib-biting and weaving. It can also explain responses to outside stimuli- of real interest to both therapists and riders. Many traditional, alternative and complimentary therapies exploit the reciprocal interaction between external sensory structures such as the skin, and the internal computatory mechanisms of the brain. This demonstration paves the way for a deeper insight into the functioning of other anatomical structures. This is Dr Hemming’s main sphere of expertise. The Forelimb will include the skeletal and musculature from the shoulder. The dissection will include the stay apparatus of the forelimb and some of the thoracic sling muscles. The Hind Limb will include the entire limb from the pelvis enabling an in depth study of the superficial and deep muscles of the hind quarters, the stay apparatus, and the joints in the hind leg including the sacroiliac joint. 09.00 Registration and Coffee 09.30 Introductions and Explanations 10.00 Practical sessions 12.30 Working Lunch 3.00 Questions 3.30 Close
